Long season ahead

Post by Tommy Cunningham »

Listening to Michael Beale after the game last night, he seemed very frustrated and some of his comments
should be a real concern for supporters. Injuries are mounting, squad seems very depleted after one
league and one cup game. He also said that last nights squad, will be the same squad for the trip to
Sunderland at the weekend.

I must admit I was underwhelmed by the Beale appointment, but last night I admired his honesty and he
said it as he saw it. He was critical of some of the players, but this was not a surprise to us.

There were players in that team last night, who should be nowhere near a QPR starting line up.
An even bigger issue for me is where was the justification, in awarding some of these players long term contracts.

Our CEO and DOF have had it easy for a long time, I can see the mood amongst supporters changing
towards them very soon.

.....and yet, we put in a good display against Boro; well, 1st half anyway - but overall enough to earn the 3 points.
It's been very up & down so far Tommy, admittedly after just 3 games; is it too early to see a pattern forming,
or will it be another roller-coaster ride of a season??

As you say Tommy an honest assessment again, and the frustration really shows.

When any player dons the hoops of QPR I want them to succeed, but as Beale said last night
about giving some players a chance. The truth of the matter is some of those same players were
given opportunities under previous management, they failed to take their chances and in some cases
have been sent out on loan elsewhere and again failed to impress.

What also hasn’t helped is some of the new signings being injured from the beginning,
then we have Amos and Willock both injured during their first appearance of the season.

Excluding the first 40 minutes of the Boro game what I haven’t seen from this group of players,
is a hunger and desire to win football matches. Blackburn and Charlton performances were below par.

Another fear I have is with the transfer window still open, that we could lose Willock and that
would really be a massive blow.

I have been disappointed once again with the player recruitment, I think our squad is definitely weaker
than last season. Beale said last night that he was hopeful of a full back loan signing coming in soon,
I think we are gonna need a lot more to stay in the Championship this season.

Our obsession with midfielders has cost us yet again. Warburton couldn’t be bothered with
defending and did not address the goalscoring aspect.

We should have kept Austin one more season under a new manager.

Do we give the likes of Armstrong specific training given we have Sir Les in the camp?
Surely we have someone better than Hamalaienen in the club who consistently proves
he lacks anything like a footballing brain.

Yet again the second stringers can’t be bothered to look remotely interested.

Too much undeserved money too soon methinks!

Yes, very true. Which is what worries me.... when we set our minds to it, we can beat almost anyone;
but when we can't be bothered, almost anyone can beat us.
Which is what I mean by another roller-coaster season looming - let's hope not.

One thing I should have commented on is the way we defend corners, the area is packed
with everyone and the kitchen sink.

Last nights equaliser showed the folly of this with nobody able to stop players standing outside
the area firing the ball back in. It happened also at Blackburn.

It also makes it difficult to undertake a fast attack ourselves.

Beale brought in a set piece Coach a couple of weeks ago, his name is Harry Watling and Beale
spoke very highly of him when he was appointed.

Given we have conceded goals from set pieces already this season, all you can say
is plenty of room for improvement Harry.

All very good comments on the current situation folks.

All I will say about our new manager and coaching staff is that they ARE interested in a decent defending
strategy whereas the Cavalier and devil may care Mark Warburton was not bothered about that aspect
of the game at all.

Unless we can field that same team/players that played the first half against Boro' we will not make any
impact in this league.

The cover is not good enough and come what may we need to sign a Striker anyway....
...is Roberts going to come off for us?

What I find puzzling about the fullbacks situation is that there are any number of ”ordinary” fullbacks
to be found in the lower leagues or reserves in the Prem/Championship that could do the job.

We need one who defends well and occasionally gets forward not one who gets forward and occasionally defends.

We should seek out wide players in midfield capable of getting to the opposition area and putting good crosses in.

This would enable the fullbacks to defend as they should and not like in the Charlton game stand off
and invite crosses.
